I'm not even going to lie, I've been having waaaaay too much fun planning Albert's and my wedding for next spring! I truly don't understand why people think it's so stressful, or why the term bridezilla ever came to be. Planning a wedding is literally planning a party for all of your favorite people in the world! AND you get to wear a stunning dress! What on earth is there to stress about? This should be a fun time, both for you and your (soon to be) spouse!
So, if you're already overwhelmed with all the details of your big day, I invite you to take a deep breath and relax. This is going to be the best day of your life, regardless of which plates you choose to serve your cake on. So remember that. And here are some words of wisdom from someone who has worked in the biz and has now been on the other side of things as a bride-to-be.
Hire a planner.
Even though I've previously worked weddings, I knew I would want someone to go to for advice and counsel on the ins and outs of the big day. Planners are a lifesaver, and they have relationships with all the best vendors in town, which will make your life a million times easier. I tried to view a venue by reaching out via email for a month straight before I hired a planner. My planner reached out and, within two hours, we had a day and time set to view it. Planners will save you so much time and energy, trust me!
Start (and maintain) a spreadsheet.
Preferably a color-coded one, if you're anything like me ;) Within days of becoming engaged I immediately started a google spreadsheet where I wrote down all the vendors I would (ideally) like to have for the big day. And even if I didn't know exactly who I wanted to hire...I would write down the specifics of what I wanted and would then let my planner advise me. For example: Do you want a seated dinner or stations? DJ or live band? Small wedding or huge affair?
Determine where to splurge and where to save.
Like any event, there will be components you'll want to spend a little more on and others where you can cut costs. For me, the most important aspects of my wedding were the food, live entertainment, and photographer. So when my planner and I drew up a budget, we knew we would be okay with spending a little more in those areas. And we made up for more spending more in those areas by cutting costs in others that weren't as important to me: invitations/save the dates (it's literally a piece of paper! minted.com all the way guys), dress (who needs a $10K dress to only wear once?! Not me) and cake (Albert and I aren't huge sweets people).
Keep a timeline checklist.
There are so many great websites with timelines on how to prepare for the wedding and when you should do everything, so I printed the best one I could find and I keep it in my office so that I stay on track with it all (also, my planner is a human timeline...so that helps, too).
Be aware of all your costs.
Don't let this list scare you but, yeah, a lot goes in to these shindigs, y'all...
