Does daylight savings continue to throw you off for months after? Because it does for me…ESPECIALLY on days when the weather is particularly dreary. Gray skies are needed every once in awhile, I know, but it 100% takes a toll on my daily energy and leaves me feeling lethargic. Anyone else?
Now, I always want to be living up to my full potential, so I’ve come up with a few life hacks to trick my body back into becoming its upbeat, playful self during this time of year! Don’t let winter months drag you down. This is the season we need self-care the most, friends. Try some of these out - it's time to take back your energy!
1. Make an Upbeat Morning Playlist
I have a Spotify playlist titled “Feelin’ Good” that I listen to on my way to work every day. Music greatly affects my mood, so I make it a priority to choose energizing, upbeat songs for my morning commute to get motivated. Some of my favorites at the moment are:
Good Time Good Life - Erin Bowman
Fade - Kanye West
Blow Your Mind - Dua Lipa
Pull-Up - Jason Derulo
CRZY - Kehlani
Now, I'm not saying that you need to be at the level of this girl in the video (she's pretty fantastic though, right?)...but you get what I mean! A jam sesh before work will start your day on a good note (quite literally - ha!) AND will give you the energy boost you need first thing in the a.m.
2. Exercise First Thing! (because you know you won’t want to later)
Working out first thing in the morning may seem like torture to some people. Trust me, it felt like that for awhile to me, too. However, this is the one routine I will never, ever budge on! Once I started working out in the morning, my energy level skyrocketed during the day. And, getting my workout done early meant that I didn’t have to worry about possibly working late and missing a yoga class I signed up for or bailing on a friend who texted last minute for a happy hour date when I had planned to hit the gym. Plus, when it’s cold outside…we just want to come home after work and curl up on the couch - amiright? I know I do.
There is nothing getting in the way of your workout during the early hours of the morning - no texts or calls from your boss, appointments, etc…just you :) And, if you commit to the routine, I promise it’ll pay off. You’ll be a chipper morning person with loads of energy in no time!
3. Embrace the Power of “No”
The holiday season tends to pull us in a ton of different directions even more so than usual. It’s so easy to overcommit yourself or take on too much extra work and then get completely burnt out. For a reeeeeeally long time, I never said no to an opportunity thrown my way because I felt like turning it down would make me miss out, and it drove me straight into the ground. I literally had NO time for myself. Every second of the day was accounted for, and it was fucking exhausting.
And, when I learned to let go of all of that, it felt like a giant weight had been lifted off of me. It is OKAY to say “No” to things, friends! :) In fact, I highly encourage it. I may end up writing an entire article on this subject at some point, because I think it’s that important. Stop giving your precious time away to activities that, deep down, you really don’t want to do. If anything else, please work on practicing this habit in an effort to reboot your energy! You'll be amazed at how great it feels to have that extra time to focus on what you actually want to do.
4. Create a Soothing Nighttime Routine
I definitely thought that nighttime routines were silly until I tried one of my own and started to feel a million times more energized and efficient when waking up. Now, this routine doesn’t need to be elaborate or rigid or anything like that…it simply needs to wind you down after a day of hard work so that you can prepare your mind and your body for another kick ass day :)
Here’s a peek into what mine looks like so that you can start to develop one that’s perfect for you! I created my nighttime routine to help me feel fully prepared for the next day, because feeling prepared gives me a huge sense of ease and comfort, and that’s extremely important to me. Yours may look different, and that’s okay!
My phone switches to ‘night mode’ so that the brightness level isn’t as harsh, and I look at my calendar for the next day to see what’s coming.
I prep my breakfast and lunch for the next day, set out my morning workout items, and choose my workday clothes.
I brush my teeth, wash my face, and then lay in bed with a book…sometimes it’s a TV series - I won’t lie to you :)
Depending on how I’m feeling, I’ll either pass out at 10 o’ clock because, you know, I wake up at 5:00am…or I’ll chat with Albert till I fall asleep :)
5. Splash Your Face With Hot Water After Work - Or Even Take Another “Mini” Shower
Now, bear with me on this one. You know that feeling you get when you hop out of a hot shower, put on your comfiest clothes, and suddently feel like a brand new person? Aka the BEST feeling ever? Well, since I work out in the morning (and since you guys will be, too! - right?) I only get to experience that before I leave for my busy day, and then most of my energy and momentum are gone come 5:00pm.
So, every day that I get to come home directly after work, I take a “mini” shower. Basically, I hop in a hot shower just to wash my face and rise off so that, when I get out, I can throw on my cozy clothes and tackle my evening to-dos feeling refreshed and rejuvenated! Ahhhh, and it’s SO wonderful. Also, I promise it won’t rack up your water bill, guys :) Mine probably takes 5 minutes max. Just try it!
Cheers to self-love!
