As young adults, we constantly run ourselves ragged trying to take over the world, achieve our dreams, and crush all of the goals we set. It’s truly amazing that we are so driven and determined, yet it can also be pretty exhausting. I’m going to be 100% honest and say that this is the first time I’ve been able to sit down and write in two weeks due to this type of dilemma. Yikes! If you guys didn’t know, that’s a blogger/writer’s worst nightmare. Two weeks without content? What if my readers don’t like me and aren’t interested in what I have to say anymore? That’s what we all think. I’m not too worried though, because if I wasn’t out there living life, making mistakes, and figuring my own shit out…then I wouldn’t have anything worthy to write about for you all, now would I? :)
I tend to go through these spurts of super crazy business and then find a way to reel myself back to stillness and peace. It’s an ebb and flow, and it’ll probably always be that way. It’s good, though, because it gives me a chance to really think about how I choose to prioritize my life, and it makes me appreciate the stillness when it comes rather than letting it drive me stir crazy.
Whenever I find myself running a million miles an hour and lacking in the self-care department, these 5 things never fail to bring me back to my natural, easeful state that I’ve worked so hard to cultivate. Next time you feel like you need to slow down and bring some balance back to your life, try them out for yourself :)
1. Listen to What Your Body is Telling You
Are you sleep-deprived and running on 10 cups of coffee? Sleep. Are you more hungry than usual because of the extra energy you’re exerting? Eat more. Are you wound up and tense? Go take a yoga class.
For every problem, there is a very simple solution that we don’t always feel is available to us. Stop making excuses for why you “can’t or don’t have enough time” for x, y, or z… and just DO IT.
2. Shut the World Out for a Day
When you’re working on a ton of different projects or committed to various organizations, chances are you’re spending the majority of your time talking to and explaining things to others. Give yourself a break from talking to people and just be by yourself for a day. I’m serious. Don’t even send an email or a text message. It is so refreshing and way more important for your well-being than you probably realize.
3. Re-evaluate Every Single One of Your Commitments
Are you always dreading going to a certain weekly meeting or event for one of your commitments? Well…here’s a thought…why are you going then? Seriously. You’re an adult, and that gives YOU the power to choose how YOU want to spend YOUR time and energy. If you don’t like something, don’t commit to it. Seriously. Cut that shit out.
4. Do Something that Brings You Joy
Treat yourself to a mini spa day, curl up and watch your all-time favorite movie, have a date night with your best friend, spend hours reorganizing your home (hey - some people love that), go for a drive, take a weekend trip, or go for a walk on the beach (my personal favorite, but not everyone gets the luxury of living 2 miles from Sullivan’s Island)
Whatever it may be for you…do something that makes you really happy, fills you with a sense of ease, and brings you back down to Earth when you're spiraling out of control and into a chaotic state.
5. Choose How You Want to Feel, and Base Your Future Decisions on It
One of my favorite parts of my mentorship program with Bethany B Yoga Lifestyle was choosing my “core desired feelings.” Basically, this means you choose a word that describes exactly how you’d like to feel every day, and then ask yourself if each decision you make is going to get you closer to that feeling.
I won’t give away the whole exercise, but I will give you an example :) So, my core desired feeling regarding career and finances is fulfillment. That means that every time I’m faced with a choice regarding my various jobs or spending my hard-earned cash, I ask myself “Is this decision going to get me closer to fulfillment?” You’d be surprised at how many times it has kept me in check and on the right track. And, you can choose a core desired feeling for every area of your life...whether it be relationships, health, etc.!
